Professor Gabriel Moran, from New York University.

Gabriel Moran followed up earlier visits to conduct courses at ACU in Brisbane (with his wife Professor Maria Harris). In 2000 he conducted a unit on moral dimensions to education at McAuley campus in Brisbane. Some of his articles are posted for study on the Doctor of Education coursework website.

 

 

Professor Marge Steward and Professor David Steward were visiting Research Scholars in the Cardinal Clancy Research Centre in the second semester 1999. They returned in 2001 and 2004.

Professors Marge and David Steward have had extensive experience in the planning and conduct of research with children and families in areas related to clinical psychology and religious education. While at ACU they have conducted a series of research seminars in which they examined a range of issues that affect the ways researchers gather information from children. In addition to their presentations they spent time with ACU staff and interested visitors looking into issues and implications that had a bearing on their research, study and professional work. They contributed significantly to the School of Religious Education's research supervision training and offered advice as to research development. ******* David Steward: ******

David S. Steward is Emeritus Professor of Religious Education at Pacific School of Religion and The Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, California. His research can be gathered in two clusters: the design of professional schooling and the observation and coding of children's experience. Traditional professional schooling in the US is shaped by guilds and the mastery of prescribed knowledge. Efforts at reform have sought to begin schooling with life experience (of students and the contexts in which they are expected to work). The scope of thinking required to do this is usually interdisciplinary. Learning occurs as language is carefully applied to problems which are complex and often "insoluble." Human imagination is required to take many personal and social problems to resolution. Professional practice requires both a grounded, disciplined mind, and the willingness to engage a world which does not lend itself to closure.

******* Marge Steward *******

Margaret S. Steward is Emeritus Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry and a past Associate Dean of the School of Medicine at the University of California, Davis. She holds a diplomate in clinical psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology. Her research, teaching, and clinical interests focus on children and families at risk as a result of prematurity, illness, divorce, and/or abuse. As an academic administrator, she focused on recruitment, hiring, and career development of junior faculty. She has served as a consultant and conducted workshops on children's cognitive, linguistic and emotional development in the United States and Australia for staff from health, mental health, social welfare, and law enforcement agencies and from the judiciary. For the past decade she has been a reviewer for the Australian
Research Council.

 

Professor Herman Lombaerts,Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium

Professor Brian Hill, Murdoch University, WA
Professor Hill, accompanied by his wife Margaret, spent three months as a visiting research professor at the Strathfield campus.
During this period he spent much time with research students and with the

development of the Meaning, Identity and Education research project.
In addition, he worked on a manuscript on teaching religion that will be published in 2004 by Open Book.

Professor James Conroy, is Head of the Department of Religious Education at the University of Glasgow, UK.
Together with his wife and family, he spent a year on sabbatical leave at the Cardinal Clancy Research Centre Office in Sydney from April 2002 to April 2003.

During this time, spent mainly working on two books, Professor Conroy also gave considerable help to doctoral research students, and advised on the Meaning, Identity and Education Project.

Professor Thomas Groome, Boston College USA
Sponsored by the Catholic Education Office of Parramatta, and also by a national Catholic Principals' conference, Professor Groome visited Australia briefly for lectures and seminars. His lectures at Strathfield are posted on the page of materials by visiting scholars.


Dr Andrew McGrady, Mater Dei College, Dublin City University, Ireland.
Dr McGrady visited a number of campuses of ACU as well as Catholic Education Offices as part of his research study of Catholic schooling in Australia. His lectures at Strathfield are posted on the page of materials by visiting scholars.


Professor Mary-Elizabeth Moore, Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta USA
While holidaying in Australia, Dr Moore presented an interesting lecture on Sacramentality, pondering questions about violence and marginalisation in Western societies.

Dr Trevor Cooling, Stapleford Centre for Religious Education, and University of Nottingham, UK
