Professor Moore’s lecture on “Beyond Violence” will explore the challenge to Religious Education and Practical Theology to enhance the thinking of religious people as they seek to move beyond poverty and violence, both within themselves and in the larger society. Within a Christian framework, this might be described as a sacramental task---mediating God's grace through the ordinary materials of God's creation for the sanctification of human life and the well-being of all creation. Such an activity, as with the commonly recognised sacraments, is multi-faceted. It includes crying, confessing, converting, celebrating, and constructing. These are communal acts, E.g. crying AND listening to the cries of others. They are also visionary acts, E.g. constructing prophetic communities and hope-filled responses.
Professor Mary Elizabeth Mullino Moore is Director of the Program for Women in Theology and Ministry, and Professor of Religion and Education, Candler School of Theology, Emory University (Atlanta, Georgia) USA.
She is well known for her research, writings and lectures in Theology and Religious Education. Recent books include Covenant and Call (2000), Ministering with the Earth (1998) and Teaching from the Heart: Theology and Educational Method. (1991 & 1998). She is currently working on a new book, Sacred Teaching, exploring the shapes of teaching when viewed as a sacramental act.
