An occasional lecture by Professor
Brian V Hill,
Emeritus
Professor of Education, Murdoch University, Western Australia
September 18, 2002
Like the parched fields in our rural areas, our society is developing large cracks as politicians pursue divisive agendas and sub-cultures draw back from each other in the wake of a diminishing value consensus. This is not less true of the churches, despite their Biblical mandate to have a concern for reconciliation and the health of society.
Schools could be a potentially powerful partner in rebuilding a convivial society, but old ways hold us back. State schools are pulled towards market priorities, while religious schools often invite marginalisation by promoting protectionist values. A new way forward is possible for both, under an ethos of “committed impartiality.” Professor Hill’s lecture will reflect his efforts over many years to suggest practical possibilities, derived from a Biblical view of the Christian’s mission in the world.
