DEFINING THE ETHOS OF THE CATHOLIC SCHOOL: THE CONTEMPORARY IRISH EXPERIENCE
A public lecture by Dr Andrew McGrady, Director of the Centre for Research in Religion and Education, Mater Dei Institute of Education, Dublin City University
Wednesday, 15th May 2002
While Catholic schools remain very popular with both parents and students, and are evidently very successful in their educational programs, what constitutes the distinctive religious and Catholic elements of the Catholic school is periodically debated and reviewed. What makes a school 'Catholic'? How does the school promote the spiritual and moral development of its pupils? What is a 'Catholic ethos' and how does it influence those in a school, both students and teachers? Do we expect too much of the Catholic school in terms of formal religious outcomes when less is expected of other Catholic institutions like hospitals, aged care homes etc? These and related questions concern not only educators but the Catholic community generally.
Dr McGrady will talk about how the ethos of Catholic schools in Ireland is being conceptualised in the works of the Research Centre at the Mater Dei institute. He will consider comparisons with the situation in Australia.
